PhD Overview

María Claudia Segovia-Salcedo, a specialist in evolutionary biology and conservation, has conducted key research on Polylepis forests, a genus of trees endemic to the Andes. Her work explores the evolutionary origins and genetics of these species, which are crucial for the water cycle in high Andean ecosystems. Severely threatened by deforestation and the introduction of exotic species, these forests provide essential habitats for numerous endemic species. This research aims to generate data applicable to conservation policies and sustainable management, significantly contributing to the preservation of these unique ecosystems.

Sustainability Goals

  • Climate Action
  • Gender Equality
  • Life on Land
