PhD Overview

My PhD research investigates the interplay between household water consumption patterns and groundwater quantity in Freetown, Sierra Leone. It combines empirical data on daily water usage with groundwater modelling to assess the capacity and sustainability of local aquifers. The study highlights seasonal variability, infrastructure gaps, and the pressing need for improved groundwater management. It proposes tailored solutions, such as infiltration galleries and borehole optimization, to enhance water supply reliability and resilience in both wet and dry seasons, contributing to sustainable urban water resource planning.

About Me

Dr. Salmatta Abiodun Ibrahim is a hydrogeologist and sustainable engineering expert whose PhD research tackled water consumption and groundwater resilience in Freetown, Sierra Leone. She developed innovative tools like infiltration galleries and seasonally adaptive borehole systems, contributing to SDGs 6, 11, and 13. A passionate climate and sustainability advocate, she also leads the national STEAM Outreach Programme, inspiring secondary school students—especially girls—to pursue careers in Science, Technology, Engineering, Agriculture, and Mathematics. Her work bridges scientific research, youth empowerment, and policy influence, making her a champion of inclusive, climate-resilient development in Africa.
