PhD Overview

Providing affordable housing is a crucial issue worldwide. In many countries such as the UK, planning systems enforce private land developers to provide affordable housing in exchange for approval on development. Yet, this obligation towards affordable housing can be negotiated between developers, local authorities and several stakeholders. My PhD research explores the potential of simulating those negotiations on a computer to illustrate and understand the factors affecting the negotiation outcomes, and in turn, housing provision. I developed two agent-based models of those negotiations and engaged with experts from the English planning system to understand how they accept those models.

About Me

I am passionate about using computational and quantitative methods to help make informed decisions in city planning. During my PhD supported by the Schlumberger Foundation, I taught myself programming from scratch and developed two advanced computational models. I look forward to transferring my acquired knowledge to my home country, Egypt.
