PhD Overview

My PhD research investigated the spread of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in Ugandan poultry farms, focusing on how antibiotic use and farm practices contribute to the presence of drug-resistant E. coli, particularly strains resistant to critically important antibiotics such as cefotaxime and colistin. Utilizing both cross-sectional and longitudinal study designs across semi-intensive and free-range poultry farms to: investigate the relationship between antimicrobial use patterns and the development of antimicrobial resistance; assess the impact of biosecurity measures on the health performance of broiler flocks; and determine the occurrence of cefotaxime-resistant E. coli in both poultry and farm workers, as well as identify farm practices associated with its transmission to humans.
