PhD Overview

Using quantitative methods, this dissertation examines how to manage the externalities of road safety and air pollution in Bogotá. It shows high crash fatality and injury risks, evaluating the cost-effectiveness of safety-enhancing technology in buses. Despite potential safety benefits, Bogota’s values of life and injuries make this investment economically unjustified. The dissertation also develops a link-based emission model to create a high-resolution traffic emissions inventory. This tool enables integrating environmental and transportation decision-making in Bogotá, shifting focus from purely end-of-the-pipe measures to more holistic approaches involving land use, transport systems, and vehicle technology.
